Cloud allows agility, cost control

A recent ZDNet report analyzed the benefits of cloud computing and disagreed with some current thoughts regarding the managed IT service.

In reference to a recent article that stated cloud computing will not boost productivity, ZDNet author Dan Kusnetzky argued the cloud is more about agility and cost control than increasing productivity. Kusnetzky states boosting productivity implies a company and its workers will be doing the same functions, only in greater volume. However, the cloud should be viewed more as a delivery consumption model that allows for access to better computing resources, many of which smaller companies might not have been able to afford before.

Thus, the cloud allows for companies to adopt scalable computing services while reducing overall IT costs. As Kusnetzky sums up, "cloud computing is far more about agility, cost control and being able to do things perviously impossible than about being able to do more of the same old thing."

More companies have begun to realize the cloud's benefits during the last couple years. Osterman Research estimated those companies currently in the cloud will increase their adoption by 10 percent during 2011.
