Report: Cloud growth fastest among larger enterprises

The belief that managed cloud services are beneficial only to small- and medium-sized businesses is a "myth," according to a recent Sys-Con Media report.

Though a growing number of smaller organizations are adopting cloud services, the fastest growth in cloud usage is taking place at the enterprise level, the report said.

According to the report, many managed cloud service providers have worked to optimize their offerings so they provide the security, customization and scalability that large organizations require.

Enterprises use cloud services for a variety of purposes, including employee collaboration, media processing and grid computing for scientific research, the report said.

The report also notes that, contrary to what some believe, deploying cloud services is a complex process. Though this process is not necessarily any more complicated than installing traditional software, there is work involved in configuring, managing and integrating cloud services, according to the report.

Increasingly, deployment tools are enabling companies to streamline this process. In addition, most organizations choose to utilize the expertise of a professional cloud provider when deploying cloud services. According to a recent KS&R study, approximately 70 percent of businesses prefer a consultative relationship with their IT provider, rather than a purely transactional one.
