New York hospital to build private cloud

The Orange Regional Medical Center, a hospital system in New York State, recently announced its plans to build a secure private cloud to meet future business and clinical needs. ORMC is also planning to consolidate two existing campuses to turn into the first new freestanding hospital in the state in more than 20 years. The new hospital will use the cloud network.

"As our business continues to evolve, we needed a solution that would enable us to transform our IT infrastructure while keeping our operations running smoothly for optimum patient care delivery," said Shafiq Rab, vice president and IT and CIO of ORMC.

He said the cloud infrasturcture would “enable our campus consolidation and transformation to electronic care processes today while helping our physicians retain access to the information they need when they need it."

The cloud will allow the hospital to easily store and retrieve electronic medical records and data in real-time. Additionally, the hospital will save money on server space. Eighty percent of ORMC’s data has already been stored on the cloud.

ORMC is not the first New York hospital to embrace cloud computing. Recently, Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, New York unveiled a cloud infrastructure to allow healthcare providers to more easily access patient records.
