The NSA develops new cloud portal

Because so many of its duties overlap with other areas of government, the National Security Administration is looking for a way to share codified information with fellow federal agencies. According to Daily Tech, the agency may be looking to the cloud to perform its vital functions.

The agency, which is charged with the tasks of analyzing foreign signals and protecting the U.S. government's network, has announced that it is in the developmental stages of a project it calls "the Quad." The initiative is intended to deliver a framework for federal agencies looking to share information with one another in a secure manner.

"Instead of taking data from CIA-specific or NSA-specific repositories, or FBI or DIA, you'll be able to query via the cloud into those organizations and say, 'do you have information that meets this question,' and they'll be able to say yes or no," said Lonny Anderson, chief information officer for the NSA.

While the details of the NSA's project are slightly confidential, the federal government has been openly vocal for its support of the cloud. According to Federal CIO Vivek Kundra, the government may be able to save significantly by adopting the cloud. Furthermore, he states governmental interest will likely support private sector growth for the platform.
