Cloud security is still debated, spurring improvements

Security in the cloud is an important part of the platform's maturation. As cloud computing becomes increasingly uniform, security considerations will become less of an issue. However, as it currently stands, secuirty concerns are still very much a part of the cloud industry.

According to Ponemon Institute, the latest debate centers on who is responsible for maintaining cloud security protocols - the vendor, or the managed service provider.

The report finds that " the majority of cloud providers believe it is their customer’s responsibility to secure the cloud and not their responsibility. They also say their systems and applications are not always evaluated for security threats prior to deployment to customers."

This runs contrary to public notions that MSPs are responsible for cloud computing security. According to Gov Info Security, security is not really a central cause for concern among cloud providers.

Many cloud service providers are confident that their existing firewalls and perimeter systems are enough to fend off breach efforts. Furthermore, the news source reports that a large majority of these companies claim the most valuable aspect of the cloud is found in its ability to cut costs.

However, this causal view on security may change. Sony recently suffered an attack on its cloud-based PlayStation network, resulting in massive data loss. According to Paid Content, this may seve as a further wake-up call to service providers that have inadequate protection for their cloud.
