Healthcare cloud adoption discussed by industry executive

The United States is quickly becoming a worldwide leader in cloud adoption. This is due in large part to the federal government’s insistence on using virtualized data in its national agencies. However, there is still some debate in the industry on how to best implement the platform in the healthcare sector.

Recently, Aileen Black, vice president of public sector for VMware, was interviewed by Government IT. In the discussion, she detailed some of the finer points of a cloud computing model that would be compatible with the healthcare industry and informed the source on how the sensitive nature of personal health histories changes the security requirements of the cloud.

Black claims that the cost-saving potential of the cloud should not be ignored by the federal government. Instead, electronic health records can be correctly managed with the appropriate platform model.

“Healthcare providers can’t go to the public cloud because of the very nature of the data and the sensitivity around it,“ she said.”But what they can do is get just about the same amount if not even greater returns with a private cloud.”

According to Fierce Government IT, U.S. federal CIO Vivek Kundra recently testified in front of a House subcommittee, telling members that the national cloud implementation efforts are well underway.
