Cloud computing vital for energy reduction, experts say

With companies becoming increasingly dependent on the internet and technology, it should come as no surprise that experts would study the potential environmental impact of cloud computing. That’s what Chris Preist, a researcher at University of Bristol, did in his recent study called “Energy Use in the Media Cloud.”

According to Preist, cloud computing providers will be vital in promoting reduced energy output in the coming years. He estimates that 1,175 gigawatts are required to enable current energy use. “This level of power consumption is clearly unsustainable," wrote Preist.

However, Preist says the IT industry has been more proactive than others in pursuing sustainable solutions. "Unlike other industries, the IT industry has consistently made computation more energy efficient," he wrote.

Tom Greener, an electronics campaign coordinator with Greenpeace, said cloud computing will be the industry’s leader on environmental issues and that companies using the cloud should make sure their growth promotes sustainability.

Cloud computing has been cited as a major component for promoting sustainability. According to a recent survey, large businesses can reduce carbon emissions by up to 30 percent by switching to cloud services.
