Cloud computing 'is here to stay,' says expert
While many companies have yet to completely embrace cloud computing, it is only a matter of time before its immense potential is realized, says business and technology expert Soumitra Dutta.
Dutta, who recently attended an event in Paris for customers of a large cloud network, noted that many companies spoke the praises of cloud computing’s future. “Speaker after speaker... extolled the virtues of cloud computing,” he wrote.
Cloud computing’s appeal has grown rapidly as companies and technology produce increasingly more data. According to experts at the meeting, more data is now produced every two days than from the start of recorded history to 2003. Cloud computing allows companies to store vast quantities of data online, as opposed to their own physical servers.
However, many companies have been slow to adopt it. “Most firms are still very cautious about the security of their data and applications when they are moved on the cloud,” wrote Dutta.
Despite the hesitations of many companies, Dutta said he came away from the meeting “convinced that cloud computing is here to stay.”
Concerns about cloud security might be abated in the near future. A recent report from Forrester Research estimates cloud security will be worth $1.5 billion by 2015, with 5 percent of all IT security spending being allocated for cloud services.
