Data-center outsourcing yields green opportunities
By Ted Samson
InfoWorld
May 3, 2007
Data-center space is in high demand these days, and like energy prices, that demand appears to be headed nowhere but up. In fact, Digital Realty, a San Francisco-based REIT, estimates that demand for data-center space will continue to rise by as much as 15% annually over the next five years.
While that's bad news for companies struggling to maintain sufficient infrastructure to keep up with seemingly insatiable demands for computing power and storage, it's been quite a boon for companies that offer data-center hosting services. According to Tier1 Research, that industry enjoyed 35% growth last year, raking in $15 billion in annual revenue.

Your Web site’s secret weapon
By Leon Erlanger
InfoWorld
March 19, 2007
Kenexa, a global provider of talent-hiring and-retention services and software, had a serious customer-satisfaction problem.
“Our Web-based recruiter application worked fine in the [United States], but with each packet taking 200 to 240 milliseconds to get to the Far East and 40 to 100 round trips per Web page, our customers in Japan and China sometimes waited 40 seconds or more to complete a transaction,” says Kamal Jain, director of ASP operations. Building a datacenter in Europe or Asia was not an attractive option. “An ASP quickly loses its economies of scale that way.”
Instead, Kenexa contracted with Akamai’s Web acceleration services, which use a combination of caching, compression, and IP and route optimization to speed Kenexa’s dynamic, user-customized content. The result: The time to complete multistep transactions for Asian users has been cut by more than half. (Read also about Do-it-yourself content distribution.)

Microsoft Still Weighing Hosted ERP Move
By Barbara Darrow
CRN
Mar. 13, 2007
Microsoft plans to host customers on its own CRM Live infrastructure starting later this year. But it's still weighing whether to do likewise with ERP.
"If we feel that it would actually help customer confidence or accelerate customer adds to have a Microsoft hosted element, we've tried to signal with CRM and with ERP that we would consider that. But there will still be a partner in there," Doug Burgum, senior vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions told CRN in an interview Tuesday afternoon.
So the door is ajar, if not wide open, for Microsoft-hosted ERP, depending on the market and other factors.

NaviSite Enters Digital Delivery Business
By: Laurie Sullivan
TechWeb
October 30, 2006
NaviSite, Inc. on Monday launched a content delivery service to serve-up digital files to consumers and businesses. The offering expands on the Andover, MA company's traditional applications hosting service with an ability to support large digital files.
The service will support content like games, music, movies, media, medical files, and enterprise applications from companies, such as Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp.
"There are some very specific requirements for gaming," said Doug Mow, NaviSite vice president of marketing. "You have to be at the exact release level of all the other Massive Multiplayer Online Game participants or you can cheat in the game, so when you provide the capability to download the game you also need to level check and make sure everyone is on the same version."

NaviSite Offers SaaS Sandbox Service
By: Anastasia Tubanos
Web Host Industry Review
October 3, 2006
October 3, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The software as a service application delivery model has seen significant interest within the Web hosting industry lately, as service providers hustle to build their solutions around the SaaS model.
Web hosting provider NaviSite (navisite.com) says its new ISV Sandbox solution, a joint offering with software giant Microsoft (microsoft.com), makes it easier for companies to develop and adopt a cost-effective SaaS offerings.
NaviSite says the ISV Sandbox provides ISVs, and anyone else who has applications that would reach more customers over the Net, with a secure environment for developing and testing the delivery of software applications to end-users over the Internet. For ISVs, assessing the viability of the SaaS model can be expensive, both in terms of cost and time, but the ISV Sandbox offers a ready-made platform for evaluating SaaS and testing SaaS-enabled software.

Software as a Service Driving Faster Implementation and ROI Across the Enterprise
Research on 631 companies shows continued expansion of SaaS across five application areas; CIOs now embracing the on-demand model
BOSTON, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Software as a Service (SaaS) is gaining traction in a number of enterprise application areas and making quick believers out of previous skeptics, according to new Aberdeen research.
Also known as on-demand or hosted applications, SaaS is changing how companies pay for, implement, and run their software applications. Aberdeen research of 631 companies conducted from March-July 2006 verifies that the SaaS model is driving faster implementation times and quicker return on investment.
"Although the value proposition of SaaS is seductive, companies considering SaaS need to educate themselves on a number of factors to make a solid buying decision," says Beth Enslow, senior vice president of enterprise research for Aberdeen and report author. "First, realize that all SaaS is not created equal. There are five primary types of SaaS, with differing value propositions."
The Aberdeen report, "The Software as a Service Buyer's Guide," documents the current usage of and interest level in SaaS across the major enterprise application areas and provides specific advice on which companies should consider SaaS for each application area and which will be better off with an on-premise solution. A complete SaaS evaluation framework is also provided to help enterprises make sound SaaS decisions.
The Software as a Service Buyer's Guide is made available to the public through the underwriting of: Expensewatch.com, NaviSite and Sterling Commerce.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM: Integration issues and bugs have paved the way for a CRM solution in version 3.0
By: Mark Clayman
destinationCRM.com
August 1, 2006
Persistence is something that every professional and company must have to succeed. This is especially true in IT, where issues need to be worked until they are resolved. As someone who believes in the value of persistence, I certainly admire other businesses and individuals with the same trait.
Regarding the topic of Microsoft Dynamics CRM--an application that has been under intense scrutiny--persistence for Microsoft has been key. While earlier versions of the product were not nearly as functional as users had hoped, the latest version has accomplished what Microsoft first set out to do--become a viable alternative to CRM competitors in the marketplace.

For ISVs puzzling over how to dive into the world of software as a service, NaviSite thinks it has the answer.
In conjunction with Microsoft, the managed services and hosting provider is rolling out a program called ISV Sandbox, which lets software vendors test-drive their applications in a hosted environment.
"We are trying to give ISVs and developers a lab environment where they can go and test their applications and make sure that they can be Web-enabled for a hosted model," says Mike Mazur, vice president for channel sales and alliances at NaviSite.

Software-as-a-service model is maturing
As a growing number of companies experiment with SaaS, customers are the winners
By: Ephraim Schwartz
InfoWorld
July 11, 2006
Customers always want their software bug-free and free of charge. Anything less is a disappointment, according to Josh Greenbaum, a principle at Enterprise Applications Consulting.
Although free software may never be widespread, when Salesforce.com opened the pricing door a crack with a model different from the standard perpetual-license model -- with its huge up-front costs -- customers rushed in and flung the door wide open.
The slow and steady transition to SaaS (software as a service) gives the enterprise something else it wants and needs: a fairly stable budget item. The per-user, per-month pricing model is a fixed cost. As such, it allows a company to predict what its expenses are going to be, says Tim Bajarin, chief analyst at Creative Strategies.
Companies are also looking for more flexibility. During the past six months, there appears to be a slow but not imperceptible movement toward other deployment models, accompanied by other pricing models.
