Study says Oracle users express cloud interest
According to a recent study by the Independent Oracle Users Group, many Oracle users are interested in running private clouds. However, most respondents are still at the beginning stages of development.
Some 267 members of the IOUG were surveyed in August by Uisphere Research. Nearly half of respondents said they are running, planning to run or are considering some type of private cloud. However, just 11 percent of that total said they were “in production at scale.” Additionally, 47 percent of respondents said they have no cloud plans at all.
Most respondents seemed to be most comfortable running and developing their own private clouds. Just 14 percent said they are using public cloud services and just 8 percent use outside providers to run private clouds.
The biggest obstacle facing cloud computing is funding. Only 40 percent of respondents said they have developed a funding mechanism for cloud computing.
Private cloud computing tends to be viewed by enterprises as safer and more secure than public clouds. However, the view is not universally shared. One cloud security analyst recently said that international public cloud services have more rigorous security standards and practices than private clouds.
