Higher eduction establishments around the world use Peoplesoft Campus Solutions from Oracle to manage their key business processes.In this reference architecture we look at the key requirements for Campus Solutions and the technical solutions that can be deployed on the Amazon Web Services Cloud.
Availability: Campus solutions needs a high availability infrastructure to ensure that both the administrative and student users can access data at all times. This solution uses multiple web and application tier servers across two availability zones, along with a highly available database tier using Amazon Relational Database Service this ensures that there are no single points of failure in the system.Elasticity: During periods of enrolment the Campus Solutions system needs to remain available no matter how many students are making their applications. The solution uses auto-scaling in the application and web tiers to add computing power to the pool of available resources during busy periods. This allows the enrolment process to remain swift and error free even during periods of high traffic.Cost: Using AWS removes the need to purchase hardware up front, replacing this with a manageable monthly cost. By using highly automated services such as Snapshots for backups and Elastic Block Store for storage the total cost of ownership is reduced because there is a lower administrative overhead than for conventional hardware hosting.
