If data is the new oil, open data in the cloud is the new gold. #MSIgnite 2018
During the kickoff keynote at Microsoft Ignite 2018, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella made many bold statements around “Tech Intensity”. He said, “What’s really happening out there is that computing is getting embedded in the real world.” It most certainly is, and the Microsoft Azure cloud, along with other hyper-scale clouds, is unleashing an unprecedented opportunity to aid humanity and better the consumer experience.
I was particularly intrigued by the eight or so customer examples of how the Azure Cloud and Microsoft’s SaaS offerings are helping organizations around the world use data in new ways, to not just solve problems, but create unique and differentiating customer experiences.
The Open Data Initiative with Adobe, Microsoft and SAP is a great example of how the power of the cloud and data sharing is opening possibilities for better customer experience. Think for a moment and remember how you were “delighted” recently by a progressive organization that truly is going through a digital transformation. During the stage presentation by these three software leaders I kept thinking about an experience I had just one day earlier.
My employer booked my hotel room for Ignite through SAP’s Concur, and yesterday Hilton Hotels and Resorts made magic happen. While I was on my flight from Boston to Orlando, I received a notification that my room in Orlando was ready for check-in – meaning my Hilton Honors ID had successfully passed from Concur to Hilton’s database.
Hilton’s email platform was programmed for 1:1 customer interaction, and was customized so when I clicked the link, the Hilton app opened on my Android smartphone. I was then asked to select a room in the app, and I was informed that my “Digital Key” on my smartphone would be ready at 3pm. After a short Lyft ride from the airport (that also shares data with select partners)… I walked into the hotel, went to the room and like magic, my smartphone opened the door.
We talk about Millennials wanting a modern digital user experience and everyone likes being delighted when it happens. We have the data and the cloud, plus the modern cloud-native software, APIs, and initiatives like the one announced today, all of which help make these experiences a near-term reality, when organizations choose to make use of these resources.
Sure, GDPR and privacy laws should always be an integral part of an initiative, but we should all be looking for ways to use today’s tools to unlock the possibilities to differentiate and win, by delighting our customers and users.
Tech Intensity was the theme of the keynote and the Open Data Initiative was the announcement. So what is your organization doing to take advantage of the mountains of data and the limitless resources of the cloud?
