Weekly Cloud Provider News – Amazon Redshift, Azure Blob Storage, Azure VM Guest Patching and VMware vSAN
Each week, we highlight the latest cloud provider news from the industry’s top providers. This week, Amazon Redshift adds data APIs, Azure Blob Storage gains object replication, Azure unveils automatic VM guest patching, and VMware launches vSAN 7 update.
- Amazon Redshift can now be accessed using a built-in Data API, making it easy to build web-based applications and integrating with services, including AWS Lambda, AWS AppSync, and AWS Cloud9. The API simplifies data access, ingest and egress from languages supported with AWS SDK such as Python, Go, Java, Node.js, PHP, Ruby and C++. It allows customers to focus on building applications instead of managing infrastructure. Read more here.
- Azure Blob Storage announced general availability of object replication, which allows customers to replicate block blob data (at the blob level) from one storage account to another, anywhere in Azure. This gives organizations the flexibility to make data available in geographically-dispersed regions and makes data access faster for users anywhere in the world. It also helps reduce costs by allowing customers to specify lower-performing tiers of replicated data. Learn more here.
- Azure unveiled automatic VM guest patching in public preview. This feature provides safe and automatic patching for virtual machines with critical- or security-level patches. This allows customers to simplify update management and maintain security compliance, as IT teams can continually evaluate the patch levels of virtual machines and deploy patches that Microsoft determines as critical. - VMware launched vSAN 7 update 1, which focuses on improving data center efficiency. This update enables customers to deliver developer-ready infrastructure, increase scale, expand file services and simplify operations. vSAN will now perform faster host reboots, resulting in improved restart times for vSAN 7 U1 hosts. In addition, compression can be enabled without deduplication, providing storage space efficiency. Read more here.
