What’s New in 2020 for AWS Redshift DataWarehouse and Analytics Engine?
With cloud adoption accelerating and event-data collection increasing at record pace, the need for true end-to-end data analytics and the ability to gain insight from disparate data sources has become a top priority for companies worldwide. Fortunately, there is a host of solutions on the market to address this need. At the top of the list: the AWS Redshift DataWarehouse and Analytics engine, a leader in this space since its launch in 2012.
AWS is extremely focused on continuous growth and innovation. In the last 18 months, there have been more than 200 new features and Redshift enhancements. And this innovation will continue – there are several new, exciting features planned for 2020. Below are some of the highlights:
RedShift 2020 – The Lake House Approach
As the need to ingest and process data at scale in real time is becoming more of a must than “a nice to have,” AWS Redshift is enhancing its architecture, moving from a traditional DataWarehouse to Data Lake-minded architectures. AWS calls it “the Lake House approach.” By providing full Data Lake integration, Redshift enables customers to operate directly on lake data without the need to ingest into the Redshift cluster first. In addition, through the use of federated queries and materialized views and stored procedures, customers can now query, join and export data across multiple data sources such as AWS RDS, Aurora and S3 as part of the same query using P-SQL or PgSQL languages.
Designed with Customers in Mind
Additional enhancements are designed to help AWS customers maintain optimal and predictable performance during peak processing times. These new features include RA3 instance type with AWS-managed storage, as well as a new distributed hardware-accelerated caching and compute layer called AQUA. And, all of this is now a part of a brand–new management console.
2019 Was a Banner Year for Redshift
These new features are only a small part of what is now available as part of the Redshift product line. In the graphic below, we can look back to see some of more notable key innovations from 2019:
What do these new capabilities mean to you the customer? Simply put, you get the benefits of data analytics with much less effort and cost, so organizations that embrace Redshift and put these new features to work can optimize their operations and create a competitive advantage. Sounds like a good way to start off the new year!
