Unlocking the Power of Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle
When Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) was introduced over a decade ago, it was a groundbreaking service that made it easy for organizations to set up a relational database in AWS. This allowed customers to operate and scale database clusters while leaving administrative tasks like provisioning and management to AWS—a significant development that helped accelerate customer migrations to AWS.
However, because Amazon RDS doesn’t support customization of the database environment, the service is not an option for organizations looking to migrate legacy or customized Oracle workloads. The good news is that since Amazon introduced Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle in 2021, customers now have a managed database service specifically designed to support legacy, custom, and packaged applications that require access to the underlying OS and DB environment. It provides all the management benefits of RDS but with the ability to customize the database.
To help customers understand how to harness the full potential of the service, we at Navisite decided to conduct our own POC using an implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) with Amazon RDS Custom. Our goal was to answer the many questions we anticipated from customers as they evaluate the service and ensure we’d be in the best position to support it.
To share the results of our POC, we co-authored a blog with AWS to help organizations understand the benefits of Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle and outline our approach, design, outcomes, and key learnings.
