#VMworld 2018: The Software Defined Data Center becomes the Self-Driving Data Center
On the stage at VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas this week, Pat Gelsinger the CEO of VMware, declared that the Software Defined Data Center is rapidly becoming the Self-Driving Data Center. Just as we begin to embark on trusting AI/ML for our daily commute, we will increasingly lean on all of the “superpowers” as (VMware calls them) to automate all of the aspects of our data centers, application environments, security remediation and more.
Without a doubt, the network is the nerve center of everything and VMware’s Nicira acquisition and the maturity of NSX has placed VMware in a great position to unlock network agility and enable the layering in of new methods for managing network provisioning, performance, and security only dreamed about just a few short years ago. Cloud networking fabric and multi-cloud deployment models are the new norm in bringing agility to the once cumbersome Data Center Operations processes. Network virtualization is unleashing a massive amount of “rethink” and re-education for Network professionals. And now that over 7,500 VMware customers and 82% of Fortune 100 companies are using NSX, it’s time for every VMware shop to consider their path to the Software Defined Data Center.
Enabling Cloud Operations teams and DevOps pros to define, govern and deploy applications across regions and data centers in 2018 via NSX is enabling Navisite and organizations with highly trained teams to be agile, respond to issues faster and use logs and AI/ML tools and techniques to proactively optimize networks and application deployments for the best cost, performance and security. No modern deployment should not consider leveraging NSX and its capabilities for micro-segmentation with distributed firewalls, grouping constructs and advanced security architectures.
As organizations pick up the pace on their journey to multi-cloud, the desire to remove the complicated management of compute, storage and network infrastructure is increasing at a rapid clip. When moving from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud or by stretching on-premises data centers to the cloud or to the edge, NSX and tools like VMware’s Project Dimension combined with AI/ML promise to redefine most of IT’s service and application delivery models as we move ever closer to cloud at the edge.
Navisite is on this automation, AI/ML, AIOps journey too, and in 2017 we placed our bets on NSX and Cisco’s ACI technologies and today we are working with clients to automate and optimize their networks across our VMware Clouds and Microsoft Azure in data centers around the globe. The Self-Driving Data Center is a goal for all of us.
